Flex-rigid PCBs are printed circuit boards that have both rigid and flexible areas, making them perfect for a wide range of applications. Typically, a rigid-flex PCB has two or more conductive layers with flexible or rigid insulation material between each one. The outer layers may have exposed pads or covers. The conductors are found on the rigid layers, while plated through-holes are found in both the rigid and flexible layers.

The Benefits of Flex-Rigid PCB Technology

Flex-rigid PCBs may be more expensive to design and produce, but they offer several advantages. For example, their reduced size makes it easier to fit more components into a smaller space, which can help lower overall system costs. Additionally, because they require fewer interconnects and related parts and components, they can also prove to be more reliable and require less maintenance in the long run.

As with all types of flexible circuit boards, flex-rigid PCBs perform well in harsh environments, especially those with extreme heat. They are also easy to test, making them well-suited for prototyping.
